Students were very excited and a little apprehensive before they set off to camp in Week 10 of Term 3, but the activities and fun quickly exceeded many of their expectations.
Some of the highlights were learning the history and importance of Cornish pasties to the miners and then making and eating them. In fact, food was definitely a highlight for most of our Year 5s, especially the ice cream "best dessert ever" sundae!
Students learnt about orienteering and then had a go out in the community, using a map to find places of historical interest. This was a common highlight, as well as having time to spend with friends.
On the last day, the students attended the Moonta Mines Museum and were able to ride a steam train around the area. One Year 5 student wrote:
When I got to Wallaroo I thought that it was going to be fun, but it was way more fun than I had expected it to be. The people who planned the trip were really good at planning and I want to thank them.
Students knew they were in for an adventure when their first activity was learning to surf at Middleton Beach and mountain bike ride along the beautiful esplanade.
We were so proud of our students for donning wetsuits and giving surfing a go. Some of the students and Mr Dal Santo, were able to stand multiple times on their surfboards! One student wrote:
One of the most memorable events for me was being able to get up on the surfboard in the water. It was so fun and exciting.
Wet weather meant that students had to be flexible and participate in different activities, but they all had fun.
Highlights included kayaking and going on the Duck Boat Tour, which departed from the Bluff, to spot a pod of 20 dolphins up close and numerous seals.
Everyone came home tired but happy from both camps with new friendships formed.
Thanks to our amazing staff for their organisation, energy and help to make these camps a success for our Upper Primary students across both of our campuses. What a team!
