Course summary
Stage 1 Psychology is offered as a 10-credit subject (Semester 1 or Semester 2)
This subject combines science and humanities in its exploration of the human experience. It does this through the systematic study of behaviour, the processes that underlie it, and the factors that influence it. By emphasising evidence-based procedures (i.e. observation, experimentation and experience), this subjeect allows students to develop useful skills in analytical and critical thinking, and in making inferences from psychological data
Course content
This course follows the Stage 1 SACE Psychology curriculum, with the following topics taught.
- Cognitive Psychology - looking at memory systems, theories of forgetting, strategies for improving memory, and social issues related to memory
- Lifespan Psychology - exploring development theories and attachment types in an attempt to explain behaviour throughout the lifespan
- Science Inquiry Skills - an important building block for students as they deepen their understanding of psychological research methods
Assessments
Students complete the following tasks which make up the Stage 1 folio.
- Skills and Application Folio (40%)
- Investigations Folio (40%)
- Exam (20%)
