Course Summary:
Stage 1 Music can be studied as either a ‘Music Experience’ or ‘Music Advanced’ 20-credit course.
Students develop an understanding of the elements of music and apply this understanding to create their own music as performances, arrangements, or compositions. They develop their musical literacy through responding to and reflecting on their own and others’ musical works.
Music Advanced
Music Advanced programs are designed to extend students’ existing musical understanding and skills in creating and responding to music. They provide pathways to Stage 2 Music Studies, Music Performance — Ensemble, Music Performance — Solo, and/or Music Explorations.
Course content:
- Solo/ensemble performance skills and experience
- Composition and arranging techniques
- Analysis skills - discussing aspects of style, techniques and use of music elements
- Self-reflection skills on the development and refinement of personal musical works
- Aural/theory knowledge and application
Assessments:
- Assessment Type 1: Creative Works - 60%
- Assessment Type 2: Musical Literacy - 40%
Students should provide evidence of their learning through seven assessments. Students undertake:
- four creative works
- two performances as a soloist or as part of an ensemble (2 to 5 minutes each, ensemble performing involves part-testing)
- one composition (1 to 3 minutes)
- one arrangement (1 to 3 minutes)
- three musical literacy tasks.
- one analysis (4 minutes oral or 650 words)
- one reflection (4 minutes oral or 650 words)
- one aural/theory examination (60 to 75 minutes)
Music Experience
Music Experience programs are designed for students with emerging musical skills and provide opportunities for students to develop their musical understanding and skills in creating and responding to music. Music Experience programs provide pathways to Stage 2 Music Performance — Ensemble, Music Performance — Solo, and/or Music Explorations.
Course content:
- Solo/ensemble performance skills and experience
- Composition and arranging techniques
- Analysis skills - discussing aspects of style, techniques and use of music elements
- Self-reflection skills on the development and refinement of personal musical works
- Recording/mixing technique and development of DAW (digital audio workstation) skills
Assessments:
- Assessment Type 1: Creative Works - 60%
- Assessment Type 2: Musical Literacy - 40%
Students should provide evidence of their learning through seven assessments. Students undertake:
- four creative works
- two performances as a soloist, as part of an ensemble or as an accompanist (2 to 5 minutes each, ensemble performing involves part-testing)
- a compositional task for students to display their ability in composing a lead sheet: an original melody or a song with lyrics (1 to 3 minutes)
- one composition or arrangement - audio recording in digital audio format (1 to 3 minutes)
- three musical literacy tasks.
- one analysis and discussion of style and use of music elements for the composition/arranging creative work task (4 minutes oral or equivalent multi-modal)
- one reflection on development and refinement of performance repertoire (4 minutes oral or 650 words)
- one composer’s statement to explain their intent and provide evidence of the skills and techniques they used in their lead sheet composition (4 minutes oral or 650 words)
