SAPSASA District Athletics

Friday 9 September

A selection of our 22 Year 3-6 students competed in the local SAPSASA District Athletic meet in Week 7. Despite the wet and challenging conditions, our students gave their best efforts with some even achieving personal bests.

The following students have been selected to join the City South Track and Field team in the SAPSASA Athletic Championships at Bridgestone Athletics Stadium:

  • Elijah – 10-Year-Old Boys 100m, 200m, Long Jump and 4x100 Relay
  • Elise – 11-Year-Old Girls 800m & 1500m
  • Zoe – 10-Year-Old Girls 4x100m Relay
  • Scarlett – 12-Year-Old Girls 4x100m Relay

We wish the attending students all the very best as they compete at this larger and more competitive event.

SACSA AFL Carnival

12-16 September

Last week, a number of Year 3-10 teams took part in the SACSA AFL carnivals.

Even though AFL may not be as big for our College, compared to other sports, our students demonstrated some impressive abilities - many due to their transferable skills from other sporting endeavours. Exposure to a variety of physical pursuits, holds students in good stead in their sporting journeys.

Unfortunately, neither of our Year 9/10 or 7/8 girls’ teams made it to the grand finals, (despite other schools being worried about competing against them). Our players’ fitness was not at the level of our competitors which was our undoing. These long, and competitive days highlight the importance of good aerobic fitness for carnival competitions. Rather than being reliant on a few stronger players, it’s the teams who are passionate and committed to giving their all, who achieve the best results.

Emmaus SACSA AFL Results:

  • Year 9/10 girls finished third overall in Division 1
  • Year 7/8 girls finished third overall in Division 1
  • Year 7/8 Boys finished seventh overall in Division 1
  • Year 5/6 Girls and Boys carnival had to be rescheduled due to inclement weather. Results will be released in the next newsletter.

SACBA Basketball

Saturday 17 September

Our Under 14 and Under 16 teams played off in their respective Grand Finals on Saturday – An excellent achievement for both teams as they are new to the competition!

The Under 14 team put-up a great fight against some very ‘tall timber’! Our players took some good shots, but couldn’t quite get enough to go in, resulting in the team going down by 10 points.

The Under 16s played next and this match went down to the wire! Both teams had highly skilled plays which saw the lead continually alternate throughout the entire match. The highest lead of the whole game was 4 points. The Emmaus crowd was loud which helped the team to hold-on and win by 2 points 31-29. A great result for these students who have had their battles, and persevered to stick together and hold each to account all season.

Our teams have come a long way since the start of Term 2, in terms of attitude, teamwork, personal abilities, accountability, and perseverance. It is a testament to not only the players but also the weekly support of parents, caregivers, team managers and coaches. The seasons have had their highs and lows, but all these moments will create memories and relationships that will last a lifetime. We are aiming increase student participation in regular Basketball moving forward.

It was great to watch so many Emmaus students playing in our own teams or in the other competing teams. Win or lose today, Emmaus students did themselves proud.
